We all have that one friend who has gorgeous skin. While genetics does play a role in our skin health, there are some things that women with great skin always do to keep their glow. While using the right products is always a game-changer, sometimes all it takes to get your complexion looking as good as ever is a few lifestyle changes.
Things Women With With Great Skin Always Do:
They drink plenty of water
I put drinking water at the top of the list because it’s the most important way to get your skin glowing. If you’re like me and don’t necessarily love drinking plain water, what really helps me drink up is adding a bit of lemon to it (and as a bonus, lemon juice boosts my metabolism!) Water has so many benefits to our skin’s health, here are just a few of them:
- Reduces fine lines and wrinkles by keeping your skin hydrated and increasing skin elasticity.
- Flushes toxins from your body, which can improve your complexion and skin tone.
- Reduce puffiness due to water retention.
- Reduce acne and blemishes by flushing toxins from your body.
- Prevent dry skin and flakes by keeping the skin hydrated.
Boosting your water intake is easy and free, so make sure you do this every day for better-looking skin.
They never go to bed with makeup on
Always take your makeup off before you go to bed. I know there are nights that you just want to crawl into bed (I’ve been there!), but take a few moments to remove your makeup – I promise it’s worth it!
When left on overnight, makeup can clog pores and possibly lead to breakouts. It can also make your skin look dull because dead skin cells won’t naturally fall off when you have makeup on. At the very minimum, use micellar water or makeup removing wipe to remove your makeup. Better yet, follow up with washing your face and using your usual skincare routine.
They use sunscreen on the daily
Even if you think you won’t be outside in the sun, make sure you wear sunscreen anyway. The easiest way to add sunscreen to your daily skincare routine is by using a moisturizer or a primer with SPF in it. For everyday use, SPF 15 will suffice. However, if you will be in the sun for long periods of time, use a higher SPF and reapply often.
They apply face masks
In addition to exfoliating, use a face mask once a week. The best face mask for you depends on your skin type, so it never hurts to schedule an appointment with a professional so they can help you find the best face mask for your skin.
Look for one that helps reduce acne, brightens skin, tones skin, or hydrates based on your skin’s needs. My favorite face masks at the moment are from Farmhouse Fresh! You guys know when I’m not treating patients at Bella, I’m probably working at my farm and yes, I love all things organic that have that homemade feel to them. I’m currently obsessed with Guac Star for hydration, Soothing Active Yogurt Mask for tightening my skin, and Clarifying Mud Exfoliation Mask for toning and exfoliating.
Wash Pillowcases Weekly
Your pillowcase collects dirt and oils from both your skin and your hair. Your styling products and any dirt from the day end up on your pillow and get transferred to your skin. Wash it once a week to keep it clean, which helps keep your skin clean. If you have acne-prone skin, change it twice a week. You’ll notice a world of difference on your skin!
They exfoliate
Dead skin cells naturally fall off and get replaced with new skin cells. However, these dead skin cells can build up and lead to dull skin. Exfoliate once or twice a week with either a scrub or a peel. This not only removes dead skin cells for instantly brighter skin, but it also unclogs pores to make them appear smaller.
They do regular facials
In addition to your at-home masks, consider adding a monthly facial at a spa. These facials offer benefits for your skin that you just can’t get at home as they can treat hyperpigmentation, photodamage, fine lines, and wrinkles. Moreover, if it’s within your means, it’s always a great idea to visit the same med spa for a regular facial so an aesthetician can look at your skin’s progress and assess what the best way to go is to treat certain issues that might create problems in the long run.
At Bella, we offer several membership options in case you’re keen to give it a try! Aside from drinking water and wearing SPF, this is probably my most important skincare tip! No matter how many treatments you apply at home, there’s nothing like having a trained professional working on your skin’s specific needs.
They add Vitamin C & Vitamin A to their skincare routine
Add anti-aging products to your skincare routine before you need them and before your skin shows signs of aging. Vitamin C and retinol (a vitamin A derivative) are some of the best anti-aging ingredients. Vitamin C is an antioxidant that neutralizes free radicals that can cause signs of aging, here are some of my go-to skincare products with vitamin C in them:
SkinCeuticals C E Ferulic
SkinCeuticals C E Ferulic is one of the best vitamins for clear skin.
